Anger Disrupts Liver Function
As the largest internal organ, the liver has an overwhelming responsibility providing over 500 different functions. In other words, the liver plays a major role in the search for greater health.
The liver is burdened with so many responsibilities. When the liver is overwhelmed it’s ability to accomplish so many different tasks can be weakened.

The constant day to day drip, drip, drip of mental emotional stress greatly disrupts liver function. Modern stress is not sustainable and eventually it drains away health. Because of the liver’s major role in supporting health, such disruptions can lead to all sorts of health issues and can be hard to treat.
Below are some of the responsibilities of the liver from a modern medicine perspective;
- Removal of toxins
- Regulation of blood composition
- Regulates levels of sugar, protein and fat entering the blood stream
- Processes nutrients absorbed by the intestines during digestion and and converts them into a more usable form
- Produces cholesterol and important proteins
- Secretes bile into the gall bladder to help breakdown and absorb important fats during digestion
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) says emotions can have a strong negative influence on liver function. In TCM, the Liver promotes the smooth flow of qi (think function). Consistency is the key to encouraging good liver function. Anything with such large responsibilities needs to stay focused. Distractions will prove to be costly.
Emotions can cause irregularities that can place a strain on health. A variety of physiological cycles related to sleep, digestion, activity and rest are optimized when they are promoted with regularity or consistency. For example, going to bed and waking up at consistent times, eating at consistent intervals, regular exercise and resting at appropriate intervals can be beneficial to health. If your emotions are not even but are filled with lots of ups and downs this could be considered irregular.
These cycles go round and round. Promoting consistency builds momentum. Stuck in irregular patterns will disrupt momentum. This can lead to diminished liver function and a large variety of health problems.
If you feel irregularities such as moodiness, irritability, frustration, low energy or even high energy this could mean an imbalance in liver function.
In general, all types or emotions can present an irregularity to disrupt liver function but anger is the main emotion. Anger can overheat liver function. Anger is a manifestation of excessive energy building up internally. If this internal buildup is not expressed it can eventually explode. Shouting is the usual expression of anger. Stuck or stagnant feelings such as frustration, irritability, resentment, animosity can also overheat the liver and lead to anger and shouting as well. Staying bottled up inside is not good and can feel like a pressure cooker. Over time this pressure could cause harm to internal organs.
Good self-care practices that smooth out your emotions and promote calmness and evenness to support mental-emotional health can be very helpful. Such practices can include meditation, tai chi, chi kung, and simple breathing techniques.
Acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet consultations and lifestyle consultations focus on sleep are examples of natural health care that can also be very helpful.
All of these methods can provide a deeper sense of awareness and early methods of prevention to put you on the path to feeling the best you can feel.
