Got Sweet Cravings?
I would say the major problem we have today in diet is not fat or salt but sugar. Let’s dive in deep to the cellular level to understand this problem with sugar and how it can lead to all sorts of health problems including diabetes, infertility, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalance, heart disease, allergies and on and on.
The body’s cells are like little engines that need fuel and sugar or glucose is 1 type. The outer cellular walls are lined with many different types of receptors – in this case we’ll talk about insulin receptors. When the body detects sugar in the blood the pancreas releases insulin to move this fuel into the cells. When there are high levels of glucose and insulin in the blood over time the cells can develop insulin resistance and the receptors become blocked preventing the fuel from getting into the cell. The body has the ability to self-regulate trying to prevent too much sugar from getting in. Now with many receptors block and very little fuel getting in fatigue and sweet cravings kick in. The person eats more sweets and the cycle continues to perpetuate itself spiraling deeper into a degrading state of health.
Trying to reverse insulin resistance is key to good health so what you need to do is to eliminate all sweets. Doing this will clear these receptors on the cell walls and over time body cells will be able to receive fuel, your energy levels will improve and the sweet cravings will disappear.
What’s important to understand is that glucose comes not only from the obvious cakes, cookies and other sweet things but also from staple foods like bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice. All cereals and grains have a higher glycemic index and we tend to eat too much of these foods. I would suggest getting professional help if you decide to do a radical change to your diet to make sure you are doing the best you can to move yourself towards better health.
