Not having health insurance coverage for acupuncture has been a challenging issue that I have seen over the past 14 years since I’ve been practicing holistic medicine at the clinic of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine in Coventry.
Although some insurance plans do cover acupuncture many plans are limited.
BUT I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS!!!
I am a provider with Blue Cross Blue Shield and they just sent me a letter today about some exciting benefit changes for select Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) Medicare Advantage members and their plans.
Effective for dates of service on or after January 1, 2020 BCBSRI will now cover acupuncture benefits for the following plans:
- BlueCHiP for Medicare Value
- BlueCHiP for Medicare Extra
- And the new plan – HealthMate for Medicare PPO.
On all 3 there’s a $20 Copay, no referral needed and the visit limit is 12 visit per calendar year.
It’s a step in the right direction!
I believe with the opioid epidemic we will be seeing more and more coverage because conventional medicine is actively looking for more safe, effective and natural solutions.
RIGHT NOW many people are reviewing their health plans so if you or someone you know has been look for insurance coverage for acupuncture and these plans make sense please look into this with your insurance company.
You may not have BCBS but if you’re interested, always check to see if your work or insurance company offers coverage for acupuncture.
It’s good to know your choices!
