This topic began with comparing aging rapidly to aging slowly to increase awareness. In the 2nd part of this 3 part series I gave some examples of what I believe to be the big causes of rapid aging.
Now I’d like to write about choices we can make to put us in control to slow the aging process down.
Getting older is inevitable. Doing it well is a choice. Knowing how is what’s needed.
First I want to add a link to an article I wrote that I overlooked to include in the last part: Defining Stress – check it out here for more on that.
With all the tips out there on diet and exercise there are principles to first understand. One main principle is this – do everything in moderation, nothing in excess. The yin yang (half light/ half dark) symbol shows us what balance looks like.
Are you over exercising? Are you not exercising enough? Are you overeating? Are you getting sufficient nutrients from your food choices?
It can get overwhelming and being overwhelmed is stressful! That’s not the answer. Moderation is the key. Balance is the key.
Your mindset is the root to it all. Where you focus your mind is where your energy goes. Being busy-minded to the point of feeling anxious and nervous can lead to making you want to overeat. The solution is not to do crazy exercises to burn off the calories. Changing your diet is also not going to get to the root of the problem. How you manage your thoughts and your thinking is the root of the problem. Focus on changing.
I love acronyms that help me remember good tips so I can remember to put into daily practice. Here’s one – Practice your ABC’s:
A for ATTITUDE: bad or good, your attitude defines you. I think an ultimate goal in life is to be happy. Don’t wait for someone or something to come along and make you happy. Choose to have a good attitude, a positive attitude. Choose to be happy. Define yourself. Don’t let others define you.
Start each day from a point of pure joy. Choose it. Smile and let people see you smile. It’s infectious and it will spread and come back around to you. You can focus on the glass is half empty or you can choose to recognize that the glass is half full. It’s not the glasses fault for how you look at it.
B for Breathing: don’t let your breathing get stifled and shallow. Stay aware of your most vital resource – air! You can go weeks perhaps without eating and days without drinking but only minutes without breathing. Stress has a way of tensing the body and causing shallow breathing. Promote a calm, comfortable, deep breath. It will help you relax your body and maintain a more settled state of mind too.
C for Choices: There are things you can’t change and there are things you can change. Try choosing to let go of what you can’t change. Resistance causes suffering.
Let go and redirect the amazing power of your mind back on your mission and purpose in life. Focus on what you can change. Choose a good supportive attitude. Don’t choose to be your biggest critique. Choose a state of abiding joy for yourself.
Choose to show unlimited and abundant loving-kindness to yourself first. Fill yourself up first so that it will full up and abundantly flow outward to others in your efforts and attitude. There are lots of good choices but it all starts with you, your mind, your heart and what you choose to focus on.
