Trouble with Head Lice?
Do you start to feel itchy when school starts up for your kids and reports of head lice are going around? Ug! It can definitely be a challenge but I have a simple natural tip that might help limit your child’s exposure.
Lice are wingless insects that love to make a home on your head. They can get passed around by sharing personal belongings and personal contact.
The obvious symptom is itching – scratching your head. You may not notice symptoms for up to 6 weeks after first contact.
Additional symptoms:
- a feeling of something tickling and moving on your head, hair, or body
- skin sores that develop from scratching
- irritability
- trouble sleeping
- red bumps on your head, neck, shoulders
- the appearance of lice eggs or nits – small white objects in your hair
The eggs can be difficult to comb out as they stick to the hair shaft and need to be combed out with a fine comb to help scrap them off the hair shaft.
There are products you can buy to kill the head lice. And to avoid a prolonged infestation, you’ll need to be meticulous in combing out every single egg.
Head lice are catchy. Avoid sharing spaces for clothing and hats, such as cubbyholes, closets and lockers. Avoid sharing personal belongings such as combs, hairbrushes, hair clips, headbands and hats. Wash clothes, towels and bed sheets on a regular basis.
If you have a case of head lice at home, vacuum the floor and furniture. You may consider covering furniture for a couple of weeks with a plastic cover.
Long hair hanging down or waving around can invite some unwanted hitchhikers. Keeping your child’s hair short or pulled back can minimize any personal contact with other people or belongings. I have daughters so I fine hair clips and elastic hair bands are a must! They help pull back the hair back out of the way neatly and still maintain a stylish and fashion-forward look! Very important!
By the way, Jackie my wife and mother of our two children shared this great tip with me and I’m passing it along to you! Thanks Jackie!
