Teach a Child to Fish
I think there’s some important lessons to be learned when you teach a child to fish. I loved fishing when I was a kid. I remember, as a teenager, jumping on my bike early in the morning before the sun came up and riding out to Block Rock reservoir or Ice House pond to fish. I tried to sneak slowly, sometimes crawling, into a quiet spot along the shore before the sun came up so as not to scare the fish away. I was told by a neighbor that this was an ancient Native American fishing tip. I just loved it.
Now, as a father of 2 young daughters, I try to introduce my childhood life lessons to them in a way that can be inspiring. Fishing can be inspiring.
I think of the ancient saying, “Give a child a fish and you feed her for a day. Teach a child to fish and you feed her for a lifetime”. I modified the quote to make it applicable to my articles focus on Health Tips for Kids.
This concept is wonderful and so true! I talk with my oldest daughter, who is 8 years old, about this concept and she gets it. She sees its value. I explain that as she goes to school to learn reading, writing and math she is learning how to fish so that when she gets older she can go fishing on her own, obtain a good career, earn money and catch a big one!
Of course, you don’t catch a fish every time so there are other lessons to be learned in trying again and having patience.
Teach a child to fish and they will have an experience that will influence them for a lifetime.
