The Culture of Reactionary Medicine vs Preventive Medicine
Reactionary medicine – don’t fix it until it breaks, don’t go to the doctors until your sick. Preventive medicine – learning self-care practices in prevention that are related to your individual health needs to guard against challenging diseases and chronic debilitating illness.
The culture of modern medicine is steeped in reactionary practices and weak on preventive practices. Without a strong set of preventive tools, a person can settle deep into a disease process before it can be diagnosed, at which point it becomes more challenging if not impossible to cure or even manage.
Germ Theory vs Terrain theory
Germ theory brought down this path of reactionary medicine. Germs infect the body and cause disease. Reactionary medicine treats the body after it’s sick. Preventive medicine encourages practices in self-care to prevent sickness.
To be clear, I am not talking about absolutes and perfection here regarding cures or absolutely preventing disease but I saying we can do a whole lot better regarding healthcare if you place more emphasis on preventive medicine.
Where did this emphasis on germ theory in modern medicine begin? Some point to the French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur (1822–1895), who developed pasteurization (milk), heat-treatment process that destroys pathogenic microorganisms.
Terrain Theory was credited to Antoine Béchamp (1816–1908), a scientific researcher who lived in the same time period as Pasteur.
In short, Germ Theory influences the development of medical therapies that react to germs invading the body and causing sickness. Terrain Theory focuses on keeping the body healthy by supporting the body’s natural abilities to fight off germs and prevent sickness.
Germs, under Terrain Theory, cannot create infection or disease easily unless the condition of the body (terrain) allows it. In other words, an unhealthy body with a weak immune system will allow germs to invade the body and thrive while a healthy body will more easily fight germs off and endure unaffected.
The cultural of modern medicine is reactionary with a focus on pharmaceuticals and medical procedures like surgery. This is a very expensive medicine that has limitations because health problems are being addressed too late in the disease process.
An emphasis on prevention is very much needed. Holistic or whole-body practitioners like acupuncturists, chiropractors, naturopaths, functional medical doctors, massage therapists and the like offer therapies that support natural body function. In addition, these practitioners offer self-care practices that you can do for yourself.
Take charge of the terrain, take care of the planet, take care of your body, mind, breath, qi and spirit.
