VA Covers Acupuncture for Veterans
The Community Care Network (CCN) is a network of healthcare providers outside the VA Medical facility. CCN is a new program replacing the Veterans Choice Program (VCP).

If you’re a veteran or you know of a veteran struggling with chronic pain and in need of effective alternative care, ask your Primary Doctor at the VA for a referral to try acupuncture.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy that stimulates a powerful and natural healing response without the worries of potentially dangerous surgeries or the harmful side-effects with some prescription medications.
Here are the CCN Program Access Details
- Veterans may be eligible to receive acupuncture and other services from a Community Care Network provider when the VA cannot provide the needed care.
- This care is paid for by the VA.
- A Referral is needed from the veterans Primary Medical Doctor at the VA.

CCN Benefit Requirements:
- Acupuncture or other healthcare services are not available at the VA medical facility.
- A Full-service VA medical facility is not available in the area where the veteran resides.
- A Veteran can see a local acupuncturist closer to home if the distance to the nearest VA medical facility is too far – A grandfathered provision from the previous Veterans Choice Program.
- If a veteran has to wait longer than 20 days for primary care or mental health care and 28 days for specialty care like acupuncture.
- If a veteran’s VA primary doctor determines it is in the veteran’s best medical interest.
- If a VA medical service doesn’t meet certain quality standards.
This is a patient-driven program – patients have a choice in care and also a choice in care providers.
Here’s How it Works:
- The veteran visits the VA medical facility to address their health concerns.
- The VA identifies if the veteran is eligible for the program based on the CCN benefit requirements.
- The VA will send an authorization packet to our clinic – Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine in Coventry, RI.
- We will contact the veteran to schedule the initial appointment.
- The veteran has no co-pays or deductibles. The cost of the services is covered 100% by the VA.
