Herbal Hot Pouch Therapy

Making Herbal Hot Pouches Based on Chinese Herbal Medicine

Under the treatment of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine there is a saying, “When there is pain move it away”. Applying heat helps relax and relieve stagnation or constriction from cold conditions to promote circulation and restore a healthy balance to the body. Herbal pouch therapy combines specific herbs based on Chinese Herbal Medicine to engender a specific therapeutic effect. Herbal hot pouches can be therapeutically formulated and applied for a variety of ailments. Pain translates generally as stagnation – circulation is obstructed. Usually heat is applied to balance cold conditions or to unblock and relieve stagnation or pain.

Applicable Conditions: abdominal cramps, sore achy muscles, back pain, leg pain, restless leg syndrome, cold hands/feet, chest congestion, cold environments and more…

Supplies needed for class: Fabric (cotton works well / avoid fragile, thin fabrics) – (pouches will need to be heated typically via microwave or conventional oven)

  • To make a 10 x 6 inch pouch you will need a little more than 10 x 12 inch strip of fabric.
  • Sewing kit (needle and thread) – Pre-Sew 3 sides of the pouch before class.

After cooking, the pouches will be filled with the herbs and the forth side of the pouch can then be sewed shut.

Herbal Eye Pillow Therapy

Making Herbal Eye Pillows Based on Chinese Herbal Medicine

The expression “the eyes are the window to the soul” conveys a similar meaning in Oriental Medicine as the eyes communicate our mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Under the treatment of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine eye pillows are often used to promote relaxation.

Emotional imbalances such as stress can generate heat that can excessively rise and obstruct circulation resulting in headaches, neck pain, dizziness, restlessness and more. Applying the principles of yin and yang under the scope of Oriental Medicine to soothe the eyes can promote circulation and relieve tension.

Herbal therapy combines specific herbs based on Chinese Herbal Medicine to engender a specific therapeutic effect for a variety of ailments.

Applicable Conditions: stress, headaches, migraines, neck pain, upper back pain, dizziness, restlessness, facial tension, eye strain and more…

Supplies needed for class:

  • Fabric (soft fabrics such as cotton or silk)
  • To make a 4.5 x 8.5 inch pouch you will need a 9 x 8.5 inch strip of fabric.
  • Sewing kit (needle and thread) – Pre-Sew 3 sides of pouch before or during class. After herbs are prepared the final side can be sewed shut.

After preparing the herbs the pouches will be filled with the herbs and the forth side of the pouch can then be sewed shut.

Chi Kung is an ancient Chinese art form used to condition the body and improve health. Four Seasons Chi Kung contains a set of forms practiced during a specific season. Practicing the corresponding Chi Kung forms helps harmonize specific organ systems in the body to promote health through seasonal change.

The seasons of Fall and Winter, corresponding to the Lung and Kidney system, is a time for harvesting as the energy declines into Winter hibernation. The dispersing and expanding nature of the Lung system can be strained by the natural contracting forces of Fall and Winter.

The seasons of Spring and Summer, corresponding to the Liver and Heart system, is a time for sprouting and flowering as the energy rises reaching a high point in the seasonal transition. The rising and expanding nature of the Liver and Heart requires nurturing to ensure balance in growth.

Four Seasons Chi Kung for the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer can promote health by attuning the body to these seasonal transitions that embody the energies of Birth, Growth, Change/Transformation, Decline/Harvest and Storage.

In order to teach all seasonal sets this lecture will be held four times a year focusing on the current season and the upcoming season.

Women’s Health Engendering Healthy Cycles

The menstrual cycle is an important health indicator regarding feminine health. Under the guidelines of Oriental Medicine good health can be compared with a smooth flowing circulation within the body in reference to body function such as digestion, mental-emotional aspects, posture, breathing, environmental conditions, lifestyle patterns, and cardio output to name a few. The menstrual cycle is no exception. Physical trauma, mental-emotional imbalances, blood disorders, diet and lifestyle patterns can obstruct circulation that result in uncomfortable signs and symptoms which can give rise to cycle imbalances.

Being able to identify cycle imbalances can help you engage in preventative measures that may offer relief. This seminar will discuss the menstrual cycle according to Western and Eastern medical principles and offer a variety of self-help methods to promote harmony in the cycle and encourage relief.

Tai Chi in the Park – FREE / SEASONAL –

A NOTE OF CAUTION: All participants are responsible for their own safety. The park grounds can be uneven and therefore balance and sure-footing could be a challenge, especially for those with limited mobility.

As a rule of safety I inform all students about the 80% RULE – NEVER extend or move more than 80% of your ability so as not to over-extend and cause injury. This applies to all aspects including mental, physical and breathing techniques that are often applied. It’s difficult to access exactly where 100% of our ability is from day to day and so to continue to progress forward in good health and not be set back by avoidable injury it’s important to apply the 80% RULE.

Tai Chi is gentle, relaxing yet invigorating. My classes are open to all folks of all ages and abilities and therefore I feel the need to promote a safe environment for all to enjoy Tai Chi.

MEDITATION WORKSHOP

The Unity of Mind, Body, Breath, Qi and Spirit TRANSFORMING CHAOS INTO TRANQUILITY

Stress is considered the biggest cause of illness and disease in our culture today. Dis-ease manifests as our sense of self-awareness and well-being is lost in chaotic lifestyle practices. Mental focus is scattered, breathing becomes shallow, physical body function degrades, the spirit withers and a diminished reverence and respect for ourselves and the world around us grows. Other buzz-words such as multitasking, tension, fatigue, impatience, lack of focus and concentration have become common descriptors in daily life. Living can be made easier with a natural, calm mind. Meditation is a wonderful way of promoting health and wellness by strengthening the mind-body connection and turning chaos into a deep, satisfying sense of relaxation and tranquility.

“It is estimated that 75-90% of visits to primary care physicians are for stress induced complaints, many of which can be alleviated by appropriate stress reduction techniques.” (The American Institute of Stress)

This Introductory workshop will focus on the practice of meditation based on the principles of Traditional Oriental Medicine, Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung.
